Historic Sites, Museums

Woodchuck Lodge Just to the north of the Homestead on Burroughs Memorial Road, is Woodchuck Lodge, summer home of John Burroughs in his later years.  He spent part of his days writing in the Burroughs Homestead barn.   Burroughs’ gravesite at Boyhood Rock, once a part of the Homestead farm, is now a New York State park.  

Walking Tour of Historic Roxbury Roxbury is the birthplace of both John Burroughs and railroad magnate and robber baron Jay Gould. Many of the homes along Main Street (Route 30) in the hamlet, including her own home, Kirkside, and its Park, were built by Gould’s daughter, Helen Gould Shepard, including the Jay Gould Memorial Reformed Church, with its Tiffany stained glass, and the Shepard Hills Golf Course, a gift for her husband.  Walking tours can be arranged as noted on the Town of Roxbury website.  

Roxbury Arts Group a multi-arts organization offering theater, music, dance, arts, festivals, concerts, exhibitions, and workshops. Right in town.

Roxbury boasts its own highly acclaimed ski area, Plattekill, loved for its challenging runs as well as its attentiveness to experts and beginners alike.  Wonderful ski school.

 All the ski areas offer a variety of warm weather activities including mountain biking and music festivals.

Bicycling; Hiking

 If you don’t bring your own, bicycles can be rented at Roxbury General, right in town.  

 The Catskill Scenic Trail is a maintained 26 mile trail, that is perfect for hiking, biking, or cross country skiing.

Golf

Shephard Hills, Roxbury Built by Jay Gould’s daughter, Helen Gould Shepherd, as a gift for her husband, Shephard Hills is a breathtakingly beautiful 9 hole course, right in town.  The restaurant at the Clubhouse is run by Ate-O-Ate Catering, some of the best food you will ever eat!  Mrs. Shephard got around on the course by chauffeur-driven Packard!  

Hanah, a championship 18 hole course, 10 minute drive.

SUNY Delhi College Golf Course known for its 60s design, 45 minute drive. 

Fishing

The headwaters of the East Branch of the Delaware River are on the north end of town.  Roxbury is located in the NYC watershed, and the reservoirs and river are excellent places to fish.  Here’s a link to all the regulations, published by the Department of Environmental Conservation.
